Ruben was named "President Emeritus" of the VC-35/VA(AW)-35 Association at its Annual Meeting in Albuquerque, New Mexico, 2002, during the group's 10th Reunion. He was awarded this title along with some gifts for all he has done in forming our Association and serving as its President for ten years, from 1993 to 2002.
Ruben grew up in El Paso, Texas, joined the Navy, became an Aviation Metalsmith and worked his way up through the ranks to achieve the rank of Lt.Cdr. Ruben served in the Navy for 31 years. In 1991, Ruben decided to organize a VC-35 reunion. After placing ads in several military magazines, he was contacted by 50 former squadron members. He organized a first reunion of the group and on June 3, 1993, 19 shipmates and 10 spouses met in El Paso, Texas hosted by Ruben. The first business meeting was held at that reunion on June 5, 1993. Those present voted to form an Association, elect officers and meet annually. Thus the beginning of the VC-35/VA(AW)-35 Association. The first elected officers were:
In 1992, Burke Porter compiled our first Master Roster (1990-1992), using enlisted microfilm from the National Archives. Burke passed away in September 1996. Later, Ted Clay joined the research team and produced a Roster of all hands who served in the Squadron during the nine years of it's existenance (1950-1959). Through the efforts of Chuck and Mary Borris, in November 1993, our first Newsletter was published. What started out as four pages has grown to 20 or more. Since our first Master Roster used only enlisted data, in 1994, Howard Laughon, using Social Rosters, began compiling an Officer Roster by Van Teams. Thanks to Susan Guy, Chuck Borris, and the Website Committee, our website came online in August 2000. This has allowed former shipmates to more easily locate us. While this squadron was in existence for only a relatively short time (1950-1959), its fame was established during three Korean "Night-Heckler" combat years. Most Korean communists were intimately familiar with VC-35. |
